Court On The Run
A lawyer in Winnipeg who was defending a man on trial for assault was in the
middle of an impassioned and eloquent plea for the man's bail to be reduced. He
explained that the defendant was a family man with strong ties to the area, who
had every intention of seeing the trial through to the end. Just as he was winding
up his speech, with the judge seeming to be fairly sympathetic to the lawyer's
argument, the defendant ducked under the arm of his guard and made a dash for
freedom! He had not got past the front steps of the courthouse before he was caught
and brought back to the courtroom. The judge, understandably, raised the bail
to quadruple what it had originally been.
