The trial of a young man from Liverpool for the armed robbery of a garage was going well for him, until the garage attendant testified that the young man was indeed the thief. Upon hearing this, the defendant leapt to his feet and yelled angrily, "That's a lie! I wish I'd shot you while I had the chance!' Realizing his mistake, the man then falteringly added, 'If it had been me there, I mean.' With this, his defence fell apart, and the judge took very little time to find him guilty, recommending a particularly long jail sentence.
