DIY Lie Dectector

A man living in a small town in Texas who was well-known to the police as a criminal had nevertheless managed to get away with committing various petty misdemeanours for several years, due to a lack of evidence. Two policemen who had been following his criminal career for a while eventually got fed up and decided to arrest him anyway.

They told him he would have to face a lie-detector test at the police station in order to help them prove whether he was guilty or not. It being a small and badly equipped police station, they did not have a lie-detector machine to hand, but they decided not to let that bother them!

They placed a colander on the man's head and used a piece of wire string which they pretended was plugged into the photocopier. They then questioned the man about the various crimes they suspected him of perpetrating, and every time he said something they thought to be false, one of them pressed the 'copy' button on the photocopier so that it spat out a copy of a piece of paper on which they had printed

'HE'S LYING'. After half an hour or so of what the man clearly believed to be an effective and impressively high-tech interrogation, he thought the game was up, and confessed comprehensively to all the crimes they suspected him of - as well as a few they didn't!
