Morgue worker took home body part 'trophies'
Thursday, August 23, 2001
A Canadian morgue assistant has been charged with taking home a skull, body parts and photos of dead people as 'trophies'.
Police say the body parts were found during a raid on the home of Jurek Ladziak, in Burlington, Ontario. Ladziak, 52, has been charged with offering an indignity to a human body and possessing stolen property.
Sergeant Val Hay said police found the skull of an unknown person, about 200 autopsy pictures and slides and other items stolen from bodies during autopsies.
Police allege the suspect took the items during the "normal course of his duties" working over several years as a laboratory technician and morgue assistant at hospitals in Kitchener, Hamilton and Toronto.
Ontario Deputy Chief Coroner Jim Cairns said his office is trying to identify the skull through missing persons reports and dental records, reports the Winnipeg Sun.
