'Monks cheated lottery winners out of windfall'
Thursday, August 23, 2001
A couple claim they have been cheated out of a lottery prize by two Malaysian monks who helped pick the winning numbers.
Their prediction won the equivalent of £136,000.
The couple sent the monks the winning ticket for special prayers and haven't seen it since.
The husband and wife from Seramban say the monks warned their young son would be hit by misfortune unless they handed over the ticket to be blessed.
They told the Malaysia Star: "We did as we were told because the monk said the temple would bank in the prize money to our account once the special prayers were done.
"Then we were told we had no right to the money as the ticket belonged to the temple."
The couple paid 6,470 Malaysian Ringgits (about £1,200) for the monks' prediction. The monks are alleged to have also demanded more money to quell a curse which came with the winning ticket.
