Man staged taxi robbery so he could be jailed
Wednesday, November 7, 2001
A Hong Kong man staged a taxi robbery then asked the driver to take him to a police station so he could go to jail.
Leung Siu-wai says he wanted to go to jail because he is unemployed, penniless and in debt.
He pleaded guilty to trying to rob Cheung Shu-wo shortly after getting into his taxi in Fanling on June 1. He will be sentenced on September 13.
Leung, 23, threatened the driver with a paper cutter, demanding: "Give me $500 or drive me to a police station."
When Cheung told him he only had $100 (about £9), South China Morning Post reports Leung refused to accept it and told him to go straight to a police station.
Deputy Judge Ian Candy accepted that Leung committed the offence out of desperation but said this was no excuse.
