Australian government appoints its own "pimp"
Tuesday, October 16, 2001
An Australian state is appointing its own "pimp" to increase the number of brothels.
The Queensland government is hiring an independent umpire to decide on applications to open brothels. Too many were being rejected by local councils.
Opposition MP Howard Hobbs, told government ministers in state parliament, "Now your government has decided to appoint its very own pimp."
But Nita Cunningham, Local Government Minister, says an independent assessor is needed because too many applications to open brothels are unfairly rejected.
"Also, there has been a desire by some members in local government to play politics on this issue," she said.
Opposition MP Jeff Seeney continued the attack, targeting Police Minister Tony McGrady, Australia's ABC news reports.
"What is your target for the establishment of brothels in Queensland and what will you consider to be enough?" he asked.
"Mr Speaker, the Queensland Government has no target," Mr McGrady told parliament.
