Drunken wedding guest shoots bride

A wedding guest in Turkey has accidently shot both the bride and a relative with the same bullet.

The bride was shot in the foot and one of her relatives injured in the stomach.

The guest had intended to fire his gun in the air in a traditional celebration.

Turkish daily Milliyet reported the bride, 19-year-old Safiye, spent her wedding night in hospital.

She had been celebrating her wedding to Ersin Aktas, in the village of Cayla, in Thrace.

Necip Cankilic, a chief district official, turned up at the party with a group of drunken friends intending to fire his gun into the air in a traditional show of support for the couple.

The man he injured, Ahmet Tuncel, is still in hospital being treated for a stomach wound.

Cankilic was arrested one day later by local gendarmes and has apologised for his mistake.
